One of my tasks was to investigate the ISO as a standards body and its relevancy
to us. It is the largest standards organization in the world, and its focus is very much on the making of standards, and little to do with promoting them. Membership happens at the country-level, so people join the ISO organization for their country. For the
US it is ANSI, and its membership fees are based on company revenues, with the lowest costing $1,165 US per year. It should also be noted that the ISO charges for the purchase of a copy of a standard, typically about $120 US.
I also investigated the Object
Management Group (which has the awesome acronym "OMG"), and while it has
open membership, and is aimed at not-for-profit technology standards, its
membership fees are on par with that of ISO.
Cheers!
