Subject: RE: [dita] Index question

Hi Joanne,

Here's an attempt to answer your question.

The indexterm is allowed in metadata at the top of the topic.

It is more appropriate as topic metadata than an insert in the title that is intended to apply to the entire topic. The chain of elements is:

<topic>
  <prolog>
     <metadata>
         <keywords>
             <indexterm>

Best wishes,

Bruce

It would also be helpful to put an <indexterm> in a short description - you can't do that either.

Micheal and Chris,

My staff just told me that they cannot add an <indexterm> tag to a title. In most indexing best practices, you do include index tags at the title level to point a reader to an entire topic. Is there a reason that an <indexterm> tag is not allowed in a topic title? Can we include it there? Why is <indexterm> not a universal attribute? It would also be useful to place an index tag at the beginning of a property list or table.
