Subject: RE: Issue 12007 : Indirect reference/keyref proposal

The ad hoc sub-committee that has been working on the indirect reference/keyref proposal (#12007) will be meeting again this Thursday morning.  So, if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, if you could get them to us before then, it would be most appreciated.

Some issues for which feedback would be particularly welcome include:

  1. Does the current proposal meet the key definition needs of the Controlled Values proposal (#12031)?

  1. Are people willing to accept the proposed key reference syntax:
         href="”ditaref:keyname”"
         href="”ditaref:keyname/elementid” or should we be considering some other syntax that avoids using a URI scheme (ditakey:) or something that looks like a URI scheme since new URI schemes are being discouraged. Other approaches might look something like this:
                href="”[keyname]”             href="”[keyname]/elementid” or
                href="”$keyname”             href="”$keyname/elementid” You should feel free to suggest alternatives to the [square brackets] or the dollar sign ($).

    The draw back to these alternatives is that an href value that contains a key reference of this sort would not be a valid URI. An href value does not have to be a valid URI, but in DITA today all of the href values are in fact valid URIs.  We could change this, but we aren’t sure if it will cause implementers serious problems or not. Feedback from real implementers would be most welcome.

There is a list of other issues at the end of the draft proposal. Feedback on any of those issues would be welcome too.

Subject: Issue 12007 : Indirect reference/keyref proposal

Attached is the current draft of the proposal for DITA Issue # 12007 : Indirect referencing based on key references and key definitions to increase reusability of content.

This was originally proposed feature #40 (11040).

The current draft is based on an initial draft by Michael Priestly and is the work of an ad hoc subcommittee convened by Michael Priestly that includes: Michael Priestley, Jeff Ogden, Erik Hennum, Deborah Pickett; Ian Larner; Michael Gannon, and Eliot Kimber.

This proposal is not yet ready for discussion by the full DITA TC, but the ad hoc subcommittee would welcome comments and suggestions on the current approach as outlined in the draft. Send your comments to this list (dita@lists.oasis-open.org) or to jogden@ptc.com or to mpriestl@ca.ibm.com.
