Subject: DOCBOOK-APPS: The DocBook Affair - Part 2
The DocBook Experience Part 2 Patrick Powell 1. The Pain Starts - Wed Jun 14 In Part 1 of this little series, I related how I kissed the Princess, slew the dragon, and formatted my document. Well, the Princess is now suing me for sexual harassment, the EPA is suing me for creating a toxic waste hazard and the Forestry Dept for killing an endagered species, and the formatting isn't quite working right. So here is a list of the problems I have hit, and some things that should be done to clear things up. 2. Where are the FM's? When I did the default setup for my document formatting, I used the teTeX installation that I normally used. It apparently has a default set of macros (jadetex). I discovered that the format was not quite right, and I would need to massage the TeX output OR have some of the TeX macro settings modified slightly. So I looked into how the formatting is done: jade tex X.smgl -> X.tex X.tex + jadetex -> X.dvi OK, I can handle this. (grep /find/ munge munge...) OK, I find the jadetex macros. Ummm.... uhh... No 'Guide for the Bewildered' here. I look up JadeTex on AltaVista, hit the Tex Users Group (TUG) reference, and go to the site. Find stuff, but no reference to the documentation. No 'internals'. I did find 1999-12-17 Sebastian Rahtz <sebastian.rahtz@computing-services.oxford.ac.uk> RELEASE 2.10 * jadetex.dtx: used u*sty instead of u*tex * note dependence on PassiveTeX package Strange... this appears to be OLDER than the release used by the FreeBSD folks. Question 1: Is/where there any documentation on the JadeTex macros available on line? Where are the latest versions? NIK: you should put this into the FreeBSD DocProj Primer!!! Sigh... 3. Changing the style of the TeX Output - Fri Jun 17 2000 OK, I know that this is silly, but unless you have a guide to the various macros that are used for the TeX output, it is very hard to change the style used for it. Also, I have a couple of minor notes about some of the styles chosen for the output. a) The page numbers are off a bit. The title page starts as (i) (roman number i) and is not printed on the page. In fact, page numbers are not printed until the TOC usually. b) Page numbering then starts, and continues until you get to the first section. Notice that the Preface is numbered using the roman number stuff. c) The first section or major division after the TOC restarts the page number sequence at 1, and continues on to the end of the book. BIG QUESTION 2: OK - how do I convince the Jade+ DocBook + JadeTex overall system to do this? 4. Missing Some of the Naughty Bits in DSSSL Style Sheets I am putting out the 2nd edition of my documentation. So I looked up 'Edition' in 'DocBook - The Definitive Guide (to Losing Hair)' and found there was an 'Edition' thingy... So I used <edition>2nd Edition</edition> I used it, and ... NO EDITION information was produced for HTML and the TEXT. Resorting to my trusty 'find . -exec grep -i edition {} \; -print', I discovered... that there is no support in Norm Walsh's style sheets. Sigh... OK, I am kinda whimpy on this. Question 4: Is there an 'easy' way to simply have 'Edition' make use of the same dsssl formatting as 'Subtitle'? Would this be cheating? Would this be the 'right thing to do?' Or should the dsssl stylesheets be updated to include 'Edition' 5. OpenJade VS Jade - Sun Jun 18 2000 Well, I was thumbing through some notes, and I hit a reference to OpenJade. I made a note, then found a reference to 'OpenJade' on the Oasis site, and a dead link on one page. So I turn to Lycos/AltaVista: OpenJade: http://www.netfolder.com/DSSSL/index.html - dead link... OpenJade: Source Control Repository - site moved and dead link... http://www.go.dlr.de/fresh/unix/src/misc/.warix/openjade-1.3.tar.gz.html The host http://peano.mathematik.uni-freiburg.de/ seems to be down (for 3 days?) I hit one site that works: http://linux01.gwdg.de/doc/packages/openjade/ Strange... You get links to: http://www.netfolder.com/DSSSL/ that are dead. OK, we give up on this. Question 5: What is OpenJade and what is the relationship of Jade and OpenJade? Question 6: is the site http://peano.mathematik.uni-freiburg.de DOA or is it just temporary?
