Thank you for the reference. The -Xss does not seem to be ignored with Java
1.4, but unfortunately it does nothing to alleviate my problem.

I was finally able to resolve the problem by using EDITBIN.EXE to increase
the stack reserve for java.exe from 256K to 1M.
