Hi Sam,
The first messages about needing to specify $target.database.document should
not appear when collect.xref.targets="only".  In that mode, it is not
actually processing the olink elements, it should only be collecting ids and
title information.  I'm not able to duplicate that problem when using
"only".

The messages about "Xrefs only supported ..." were a benign known problem,
and they have been fixed in CVS.

When you say these recently starting appearing, what else might have
changed?
