I think that EPUB3 stylesheets emits a lot of code which guarantees good functionality in older readers. I have no problems with EPUB3 output generated from DocBook in my very old Nook. And it uses same software as other readers (Adobe crappyware) so I bet other readers will behave similarly. If you have faced some compatibility problems then it would be good if you can report them -- it's very likely that there is workaround for this.
