There is much still to be done in this area.

In the OASIS CAM TC we've taken a pragmatic approach
to amelorating the limitations of schema (it was not intended
for everything people are trying to use it for - surprise!).

You may find these details instructive - and also the SWOT
analysis on W3C schema from the CAM presentation in 
London.
