Subject: Re: [egov] Re: Need advice regarding XML performance issues
Michael, You were somewhat vague in your fishing criteria - but let me throw two somethings into the mix - #1 commercial systems using huge transaction exchanges - 20 to 40 Megabytes and up daily. Here is where I see people have had issues on physical performance - and they have resolved them in a variety of ways - mostly using compression on the wire techniques. But there is also issues of processing such volumes - and dedicated hardware has been an answer. However overall - I believe many of these issues are due to using XML in the same way as EDI - i.e. 1-for-1 conversion. Since day one the XML/edi approach has said that care and caution is needed! The optimum is to NOT slavishly follow EDI formats - but to create smaller - more flexible XML that does not need to be sent in 20Meg gobs - notice - EDI contains vast amounts of redundant information that is sent daily - becuase of inflexible software. And this brings me to #2 - OASIS CAM technology. If you want to look at something that will change the XML world in 2004 - I humbly suggest this could be one place to look. Of course I'm biased as Chair of the TC - but CAM templates enable you to free yourself from the limits self-imposed on XML by the way people use XML transactions. There is some very excitinng news coming Q1 04 on CAM availablity - but in the meantime you can get acquianted with the concepts and details from http://cam.swiki.net Thanks, DW ----- Original Message ----- From: <Diane.Lewis@usdoj.gov> To: <mwhughes@sandproof.org> Cc: <John.Borras@e-Envoy.gsi.gov.uk>; <egov@lists.oasis-open.org>; <JRuegg@isab.co.la.ca.us> Sent: Monday, January 05, 2004 9:15 AM Subject: RE: [egov] Re: Need advice regarding XML performance issues > Mr. Hughes, > your topic of research is very broad given the various XML enabled tests and pilots that are on-going in both private and public sectors as entities decide how to mark-up their data and modify the the process and business rules that apply across their individual domains. > > an example of one test is being executed by Justice community entities within the US (federal, state, and local). Suggest you directly contact John Ruegg in LA, CALIF who is a member of the OASIS LegalXML Court Filing Technical Committee to found out about performance issues regarding outcome of XML enabled implementations. During 2003 I think his office along with partners have performed data exchanges using the Global Justice XML Data Model originating from the U.S. Justice Community. > > please consider sharing your findings with the e-gov TC as your study concludes. good luck! > diane lewis > U.S. Department of Justice Wash DC > > -----Original Message----- > From: John.Borras@e-Envoy.gsi.gov.uk > [mailto:John.Borras@e-Envoy.gsi.gov.uk] > Sent: Monday, January 05, 2004 4:04 AM > To: egov@lists.oasis-open.org > Cc: mwhughes@sandproof.org > Subject: [egov] Re: Need advice regarding XML performance issues > Importance: Low > > > TC Members > > Can anyone provide any pointers or advice to Michael please? > > If there are any commercial sensitivities about your advice then I'll > leave you to negotiate directly with him for providing that advice. > > John > > > > "Mike Hughes" <mwhughes@sandproof.org> > 31/12/2003 21:12 > > > To > <john.borras@e-envoy.gsi.gov.uk> > cc > > Subject > Need advice regarding XML performance issues > > > > > > > Dear Mr. Borras, > > I am researching performance issues related to XML and need to speak with > an expert.
