Subject: RE: [egov] [FWD: US Revocation of Executive Order 13011]

John,

Questions indeed - seems that the US community is somewhat baffled here too - given the article in FCW

 http://www.fcw.com/article94533-05-16-06-Web

Enquiring minds would definately like to have more answers as to what exactly prompted this at this time - other than someone had a "tickler" alert setup some years ago to review this and it just kicked in!?!

Lessening bureaucracy hardly seems to be a key goal of the current administration!?

It's only the role of the Director of OMB that's being revoked which may be about lessening bureaucracy rather than revoking the need for IT Standards?

Subject: [egov] [FWD: US Revocation of Executive Order 13011]

On Friday, the White House announced it was revoking Executive Order
13011 of 1996 that has governed IT management in the government,
including the promotion of standards in IT procurement.  See
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/05/20060512-5.html .

It's not clear what the impact on IT standards work in USA could be?

Also - does anyone have any thoughts as to the needs / changes being
addressed in revoking this order?

A copy of E.O. 13011 is found on the NIST Web site, at
http://csrc.nist.gov/fasp/FASPDocs/personnel-sec/federal_it_jul_1996.html.

Not sure if OASIS should care about this or not!

Thanks, DW
