Ross,

Yes indeed - if election is using EML from ground up - then all kinds of good audit practices should be built-in.

Unfortunately we're talking about backing into this from the opposite direction - where EML was not used - and we're trying to distill from the results published, what levels of confidence can be determined by looking at the numbers and applying mathematics.

There's a very good paper coming out shortly on this aspect - I contributed to the review of - but it is not public yet - still in peer review at the publication.  Will alert everyone when that goes to publish.

However - from EML 530 - we're made it very flexible to report all kinds of statistics - but obviously we'd like to hear if there is a specific instance that we're missing...

Thanks, DW

Hi all,

Just a word of warning, there are other EML message types that have been
designed specifically for auditing purposes, so we have to be careful not
to extend EML 530 unnecessarily.

Regards

John Ross

I'll have to find time to look at 530 and see if it lends itself well to
work like post-election auditing (where we need to be able to do various
kinds of math on unofficial totals for complicated (or simple) sample
selection, etc.). Obviously, it's not much good unless it makes it into the
vendors' products and then those products get certified (which is something
few of us have control over).

best, Joe
