The element/type structure is included  in the document contributed (with the link included: http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/energyinterop/document.php?document_id=43357 ) in the original description. Please look at the contributed structure and see if you think it is a string.
What is in Reading Type has nothing to do with EMIX. It is parameters for how the energy usage is measured. How something is sold vs. how it is measured are not necessarily the same thing.
