Nine Web services specs become OASIS Standards

Members have approved specifications developed by the WS Reliable Exchange (WS-RX), WS Transactions (WS-TX), and WS Secure Exchange (WS-SX) TCs. These standards support reliable message exchange, coordinate the outcome of distributed application actions, and enable trusted relationships. They can be implemented individually or in combination with one another to meet specific SOA requirements. Congratulations to the WS-RX TC co-chairs, Paul Fremantle of WS02 and Sanjay Patil of SAP; WS-TX chair, Ian Robinson of IBM; Chris Kaler of Microsoft and Kelvin Lawrence of IBM; and to all participants in these TCs including representatives of IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Adobe, Axway, BMC, CA, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Intel, NEC, NeuStar, Nokia, Nortel, Novell, Progress Software, Red Hat, Ricoh, SAP, SOA Software, Software AG, TIBCO, VeriSign, US Veterans Health Administration, and others for this accomplishment.

OASIS Standard vote for UIMA 1.0 opens soon

Balloting for the Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA) 1.0 will be held 16-28 Feb. UIMA defines platform-independent data representations and interfaces for software components or services called analytics, which analyze and assign semantics to unstructured information. The specification was developed by representatives of IBM, EMC, and others. All organizational members of OASIS are encouraged to vote on UIMA; those who wish to discuss the ballot may do so through member-discuss@lists.oasis-open.org.

Interoperable Collaboration Services (ICOM) TC forms

All interested parties are invited to participate in the new OASIS Integrated Collaboration Object Model for Interoperable Collaboration Services (ICOM) Technical Committee. This group will work to specify standards for a shared workspaces protocol that supports collaboration activities including unified messages, web conferences, forums, calendars, tasks, wikis, blogs, social networks, etc. The ICOM TC will operate under the Royalty Free on Limited Terms mode of the OASIS IPR Policy. TC proposers include representatives of OASIS Foundational Sponsor, Oracle, and others. Martin Chapman of Oracle is the convener; a TC chair or two co-chairs will be elected at the first meeting, which will be held by teleconference on 3 Mar.

Biometric Identity (BIAS) SOAP Profile public review begins

The Biometric Identity Assurance Services (BIAS) SOAP Profile provides a method to remotely invoke biometric operations and access biometric resources over a SOAP-based Web services framework. This public review ends 7 Mar.

WS-DD public review begins

The Web Services Discovery and Web Services Devices Profile (WS-DD) TC has submitted a package of three specifications for public review. The Web Services Dynamic Discovery (WS-Discovery) 1.1, Devices Profile for Web Services 1.1, and
SOAP-over-UDP 1.1 specifications are designed to enable secure Web service messaging, discovery, description, and eventing on resource-constrained endpoints. The public review ends 3 Apr.

European Union includes OASIS on Standards Expert Panel

Carol Cosgrove-Sacks, OASIS Senior Advisor on International Standards Policy, has been appointed to the EU high level Expert Panel for elaborating strategic recommendations for "2020 - Outlook for European Standardization". Other panel members include presidents and secretary generals of many international and country standards organizations and major stakeholder groups. Carol is already a member of the Steering Committee of the EU Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Standards Review process, and she participates on behalf of OASIS in the EU ICT Standards Board. This is the first time any standards consortium has been invited to sit on such a prestigious body in the EU.

Patrick Durusau appointed to Technical Advisory Board

Patrick Durusau has been appointed by the OASIS Board to the complete the term of resigned TAB member, Francis McCabe.
Patrick is an independent consultant who currently serves as editor for the OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee, co-editor of ISO/IEC 13250 parts 1 and 5 (topic maps), and convener of JTC 1/SC 34/WG 3. He also teaches a course on topic maps at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois.

Harris and Eastman join LegalXML Steering Committee

James Harris of the U.S. National Center for State Courts and Eric Eastman have been elected to two-year terms on the OASIS LegalXML Member Section Steering Committee. LegalXML brings legal and technical experts together to create standards for the electronic exchange of legal data.
