Patrick, I really like Bruce's point here. There is a fundamental ontologic difference between (a) statements in the document and (b) the things those statements represent. But both are important, and people would often want to make statements about each of them --- sometimes statements about both, in fact. I contend It's virtually impossible to do this without a really flexible and granular markup technique. Maybe Bruce wants to give bibliographic markup; that's more or less case (a) ["This reference here refers that that document over there."]. Maybe I want to represent the content --case (b) ["This patient's symptoms are like those of Bruce's patient."] Mixtures of (a) and (b) are possible: ["This patient's symptoms appear to me to be similar to the symptoms described in Bruce's article."] Nimbleness is needed for all this.
