Metadata for cells?

Greetings!

I have been reviewing the proposal for metadata that Bruce posted to the 
wiki.

Does metadata for tables include cells within the tables?

Or are we to rely upon spans to attach metadata to cell content?

I suspect simply relying on text:span is simpler than detailing separate 
attributes for cells and other elements where we want to include metadata.
