Subject: Ambiguity of [xml-names] reference
This comment applies to OpenDocument-v1.2-draft7-5-xref.odt, Appendix B, OpenDocument-v1.1-cs1.odt/.pdf, Appendix B, OpenDocument-v1.0ed2-cs1.odt/.pdf, Appendix B, etc. Concern: The bibliographic citation for [xml-names] is ambiguous: [xml-names] Tim Bray, Dave Hollander, Andrew Layman. Namespaces in XML, http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml-names/ W3C, 1999. a) The text (authors, year) is for a specific version of the specification. b) The URL is the one used for the latest version, which is now different. Recommendation: Refer to a specific edition of the XML Namespaces specification, to avoid any possible confusion over differences that might impact usage for ODF. Option 1: [xml-names] Tim Bray, Dave Hollander, Andrew Layman. Namespaces in XML, World Wide Web Consortium 14 January 1999 http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-xml-names-19990114 This has the advantage of being the edition that applied at the time of ODF 1.0 introduction. Option 2: [xml-names] Time Bray, Dave Hollander, Andrew Layman, Richard Tobin. Namespaces in XML (Second Edition), W3C Recommendation 16 August 2006 http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/REC-xml-names-20060816/ This edition is described as superseding its predecessor. This edition has the advantage that the non-normative appendix on Internal Structure of XML Namespaces has been removed. Although I doubt that there are any differences between Namespaces Second Edition and the earlier ones that impact ODF, I am not conversant enough with ODF to be certain of that. If there is any doubt, Option 1 is the safe bet. I am assuming that there is no interest in relying on Namespaces in XML 1.1 (Second Edition) which is upward compatible but allows breaking down-level changes. - Dennis Dennis E.
