Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2326) Treat all typesequally, i.e., no pseudotypes

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-2326?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=17816#action_17816 ]

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-2326:
-----------------------------------------

One problem I think is that restrictions on types are not necessarily new types and if not, we should not make them pseudotypes. The restriction of basis parameters to a selection of integers does not imbue those integers with magical properties, so the fact that the very same number (from the very same cell, as weird as that might be) can be a DateParam is one of the facts of life about the variety of applications to which numbers are put.

I do think we need to sort out the types as (different) representations of various conceptual entities (e.g., text strings versus mathematical numbers of some sort). We also need to sort out what the types are notionally versus how the values they represent are also expressed in various syntactical forms. And we get to live with the fact that some syntactic forms can be taken as the expression of values of more than one type. The type is not determined prima facie.

There is, of course, no way to know that a number used as a Basis value is inadmissable as a DateParam value. The Numbers that are restricted to be values of Basis parameters are commonly a subset of the Number accepted as DateParam values. It is not useful to think of these as different types.

I've gone on too long. I just want to point out that there is something to be sorted out here, and hopefully a massaging through the syntactics and type treatment of OpenFormula will accomplish that.

> We currently have types and pseudotypes. The latter does not appear to serve any meaningful role.
