Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2506) File extension .oth/ what is it ?

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-2506?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=20196#action_20196 ]

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-2506:
-----------------------------------------

Bart, I have seen these in the wild. They are tied to the OpenOffice.org Writer/Web subsystem.

Open OpenOffice.org (2.4 is the oldest I have that I can check this with). Select File | New | HTML Document. A Writer/Web window available for WSYWIG HTML editing will open up. If you then select File | Save As ... you will see that there are several interesting cases:

Star Writer/Web 4.0/5.0 termplate (.vor), OpenOffice.org 1.0 HTML Template (.stw) and HTML Document Template (.oth). I can confirm by my own experimentation that *.oth files are not treated the same as other templates and I formed my own judgment about the usability of this as a way to manage web pages and have templates for them.

As far as I am concerned, taking no action on this issue is completely inappropriate, as is grandfathering this into OpenDocument Format without any definition beyond reservation of a MIME type as if it is somehow part of the OpenDocument Format specification. I don't see how we can justify perpetuation of this after five years with no remedy in sight.

I trust that OFFICE-2846 will not be dismissed so easily.

> Issue Type: Improvement
> Components: General
> Affects Versions: ODF 1.2 Part 1 CD 4
> Reporter: Bart Hanssens

>
> Appendix "MIME Types and File Name Extensions (Non Normative)" contains a entry for .oth
> "Text document used as template for HTML documents"
> How does that look like ? Is it plain text ? HTML ? Or just an OTT with a hint that it can be converted to HTML ?
