I like the cleanup idea, but I am concerned about whether or not replacement statement might appear to be more comprehensive than is accurate.

Granting that "can" affirms a possibility, it leaves open the question whether this should be understood as establishing that, in this example,

"The objects that can support events are controls, images, text boxes, and the entire document."

or is it

"The objects that can support events include controls, images, text boxes, and the entire document."

I suspect that in either case this might often be better stated in a note, since the schema and various elements and attributes doubtless determine where event "support" can be introduced in a document.
