Subject: RE: [provision-comment] Public Comment
There is nothing in the SPML 1.0 specification that limits it to accounts. Literally anything can be provisioned with SPML 1.0. Whether or not it is a good fit for your solution depends a lot on your data model. The best test would be if your soultion could reasonably be modeled in LDAP, then SPML should be a good fit. If not, it probably isn't. The SPML 1.0 is very flexible in the kinds of objects that can be provisioned but is not flexible in the data model that is used (it is limited to attribute values). One of the goals of the SPML 2.0 effort is to have a more flexible data model while still being flexible in the kinds of objects that can be provisioned. For us, "service provision" means requesting, approving, implementing, upgrading, canceling and billing all kinds of IT Services. Services include "Accounts" as definied in the SPML specification as well as client hardware, extensions to client hardware (e.g. an additional video adapter to a PC or software installed on a client hardware) or services manually fullfilled by support staff (e.g. the relocation of equipment to another user). We're wondering, if the SPML specification is suitable as basis for data models and inter-module communication of our solution. It seems that SPML V 1.0 and its further development exclusively focusses on the provision of user accounts and access privileges of computer systems. Do you agree with this estimation? Or would you reccomend to use SPML for our solution? Thanks for your answers!
