Subject: RE: Cooperation / Convergence
Farrukh, Within UDDI Version 2, there is the possibility of using checked or unchecked taxonomies with the taxonomies themselves "housed" within the (public) UDDI Business Registry or located outside of the UDDI Business Registry on the taxonomy providers' servers. The common usage pattern will be for the taxonomies to be external to the registry. Researching this through, and finally realizing that this is a capability already published within the "public" Version 2 specifications, we certainly can move this thread to the public lists on Oasis, so I have done so with this reply. Please reference Version 2 of the UDDI Programmer's API Reference, and especially Appendix H: Checking external value sets. UDDI has had this capability within its specifications since V2 drafts and notes well before the February 2001 timeframe where we began to review this on the UDDI-AG list. If memory serves me correctly we started discussing this in our Nov 2000 continuing through the Jan 2001 FTF sessions and on our lists. The basis of this thread as you wrote it below is invalid. However, I do agree with your statements that this is an area of overlap and one that we should strive for eventual convergence. I see no physical way that anyone can validate taxonomy usage without either having the knowledge about the structure of that taxonomy internally or having access to an external service that it can delegate the task to. ebXML's approach is to support full taxonomy validation and browsing using internal taxonomies and allow for non-validated usage of external taxonomies. In a federated ebXML Registry it would be possible to make use of taxonomies in another registry just as if it were internal to the same registry. However, I view this case noi different than internal taxonomies as a federation would be logically one registry. Hope that helps.
