It still doesn't seem like two separate issues to me. How about the following as a statement of the issue? At the moment the only way to reference a named pattern in an external grammar is by using a pattern of the form <grammar> <include href="u"> <start> <ref name="n"/> </start> </include> </grammar> This is a little complicated and makes it tricky for implementors to avoid rereading the grammar for each such <include>.
