Subject: RE: [search-ws] Open URL .... search ... holdings

The other use case I remember is for detailed holdings for serials.

I’m interested in a particular issue of a journal.  Catalogs typically tell you if the journal is held and only detailed holdings information will tell you if that particular issue is available.

Subject: [search-ws] Open URL .... search ... holdings

Hi Ray

Hope the following helps clarify my contribution this afternoon:

I think people are pushing the boundaries of OpenURL because they see OpenURL as an easy win transport that is already available and implemented in a system near them.

My hope is that from this search activity  we will achieve a low cost of entry widely implemented search service (that scales to the more complex searches) and hence people do search using a search service because there is an easy win search transport that is already available and implemented in a system near them..

When it comes to  searching holdings Matthew talked about one scenario where a search result returns 400 holdings and you then want to find which of those holdings are from particular places - eg the Bodlian and the British Library.  This to me is needs a  Search service.

Another use case  on holdings that would be appropriately implemented as OpenURL, is where the user request is for "appropriate copy"  based on context rules.  The FRED project in Australia has implemented an OpenURL resolver that takes the results of a SRW search and then returns a request for the item in "My repository"  by making a request to an OpenURL resolver which uses a rules engine to determine the correct holding based on parameters in the OpenURL request .

Hope that helps

Kerry
