Subject: RE: [search-ws] Scan - Where in Schema?

Title: Scan - Where in Schema?

I have updated the SRU response schema,

http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/oasis/schemas/sru-2-0-response.xsd

There is now a root element for scan.   And it imports the scan schema, which is external,

http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/oasis/schemas/scan.xsd

Note that the SRU response also has a root element for explain but it does not, as yet, import the explain schema, even though there is an explain schema on our website, though not current.

http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/oasis/schemas/explain.xsd

I don't want to import it until we resolve the namespace question.

So let's do that.

The  current namespace is "http://explain.z3950.org/dtd/2.0/"

I would certainly like to change that, to a new namespace inline with our other namespaces.

Our other  namespaces are:

And I think we should remove the "sru-2-0-" parts off of the first two.

So the explain namespace should be:

Please comment.

Tony - on the question of singular vs. plural … start with my observation that diagnostic has to be singular. That's because there is the concept of "diagnostics" which is one or more "diagnostic" and the diagnostic schema defines the latter.  Both the SRU and Scan response has "diagnostics" and imports the diagnostic schema. Not so for facetedResults.  I was thinking we could try to make facetedResults parallel to diagnostics in this regard but I think it would be too hard.  I think it’s best to just keep diagnostic singular and facetedResults plural.

I believe that is the intention.

Subject: [search-ws] Scan - Where in Schema?

Hi:

Used to be in 1.* we had a single schema for all response types (explain, searchRetrieve *and* scan):

    http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/sru1-1archive/xml-files/srw-types.xsd

Now in SRU 2.0 we only support two response types (explain, searchRetrieve):

    http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/oasis/schemas/sru-2-0-response.xsd

Whatever happened to scan, and is there any reason not to reinstate it in the sru-2-0-response.xsd?

Thanks,

Tony
