My view would be:

(1) No.
(2b) I have a preference for raw HTTP at this time, basically because I
don't think SOAP is as "cooked" as you made it sound. I don't know to
what degree XMLP will look different, but in particular, I think the
SOAP HTTP binding is in a little bit of flux. It seems wiser in this
time frame to pick the more fixed starting point.
