Subject: Scope for protocol discussion

Title: Scope for protocol discussion

Time allowed: 30 minutes.  Answer all questions.
1.      The "Protocols" specification should conform with the following scope statement: "Definitions of schema and explanatory text for the XML documents exchanged between assertion issuers and assertion verifiers, initiated by either party, for the purpose of confirming a principal's identity and privilege between domains."  Discuss.

The resulting specification would cover the material found in Section 5 of v0.8a of the S2ML specification, with the exception of the definitions of "name assertion" and "entitlement assertion" and their child elements.  And the material in Sections 2 and 3 of the second draft of the AuthXML specification (dated: 22 Nov 2000).  Some reconciliation will be required, because AuthXML does not separate "assertions" from the messages.

Naturally, the work of all the other working groups may impact our own work.  And, logically, we should wait at least until the requirements work is complete.  However, I suggest that we proceed on the basis of the requirements defined in v0.8a of S2ML and Draft 2 of AuthXML.  As the other working groups publish their results, we'll have to adjust our own results.

Therefore, I suggest that we hold a short discussion on the Scope, then I'll circulate a v0.1 of the Protocols Specification for discussion within our Working Group.  I propose to base the initial version on a reasonable combination of the materials in the S2ML and AuthXML specifications.

Best regards.  Tim.
