Subject: RE: [soa-blueprints] Coalogic and the SOA Business method..

Todd,

These are the points I actually was trying to provoke with putting out the organizational chart.

Some companies are of the opinion that SOA allows for decentralization of the IT organization while others think the opposite. It would be interesting to see what SOA should do to an organization as a mature model.

The important part of the organizational discussion will be the idea of a governing body for SOA.
What does this look like and what type of responsibilities would it have?

I think if a company can manage decentralization versus centralization each should work within the context of having a governing body to enforce standards, registry and policies across the organization.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Dan

They haven't updated my email address on the mailing list server yet (registered as todd.biske@agedwards.com but our server sends them out as bisketa@agedwards.com). If one of you could forward my comments to the general list, I'd appreciate it.

I agree with Steve's comments. I took a look at the org chart and one thing I immediately noticed was the individual IT groups within each business area. Does this represent the majority of the corporations implementing SOA? I know in our case, we have centralized IT, and we are trying to move away from a one-to-one mapping between business areas and IT areas.

I would not take the organizational structure too lightly in the blueprints, because I think it's something that can really halt an SOA adoption in its tracks. We've really struggled at times with the service ownership issue, and still haven't settled on a model yet. I think a company has to plan out its organizational approach to service development, whether it is a planned centralized to decentralized migration, a permanent centralized group, decentralized development with centralized oversight, or completely decentralized. The approach will likely be dependent on the organization's maturity with release and change management.

I apologize if I'm rehashing discussions that have already taken place, since we only recently got our OASIS paperwork settled and I'm catching up...

Cheers Dan,

Its important to note that the SOA doesn't always (or often) map directly to
the organisation charts, most often organisation charts are based on
capabilities of individuals rather than domains in the business. Its key
when doing the SOA map to understand the org chart, but more importantly the
real underlying "whats" org charts tend to shift quicker than what the
business actually does.

Next iteration is slightly delayed while I help out on a project for a
couple of weeks.

Steve
