eGroups does not force you to submit to advertising. You can avoid it by
paying for the service. This seems quite normal to me. Someone has to pay
for the service. If you don't, advertisers do.

The charge for an advertisement-free eGroups is quite small - I think about
$45 per year. Coule IDEAlliance cover that cost as part of its sponsorship
of the activity? It is certainly the case that some of the other
functionality offered by eGroups is very good - file vault, chatroom,
calendar etc. and goes way beyond what majordomo does (as far as I know) or
what it would be reasonable to expect Steve to do for free (though I applaud
his generous offer).
