Subject: FW: [topicmaps-comment] TopicMaps benefits?
Peter If you are interested in the relative benefits of Topic Maps, RDF, DAML, OIL etc, you might like to take a look at the KnoW website at www.knowweb.org. KnoW (Knowledge on the Web) is a consortium set up to look into just this kind of question. It has been formally in existence for just over a year (and informally for about a year before that), and has held a number of initial meetings, discussions and workshops. The outcome has been a number of candidate research and/or implementation-oriented projects. The first of these (R1 on the Projects page of the website) is described as "The study of relationships between RDF, XTM, NewsML, EXIST, EPISTLE, DAML, OIL, XBRL". Currently work has been done on developing a scoping statement for this project, but the project itself is yet to begin. There is due to be a KnoW members meeting in Reading, UK, on Thursday 20 June. Hopefully after this we will have a clear mandate to proceed. Apologies that the website content has not been updated for some time. This too will hopefully be rectified after the upcoming meeting. I'm sure that this is a question that has been answered many times before but if so I can't find the answers anywhere. So if you'll allow me: What are the pro et con on using Topic Maps instead of RDF ( or DAML+OIL, etc.)? Will we eventually have to choose one or the other or will they be used for different purposes?
