Subject: New Eclipse Project - A Free, Simple Container for TOSCA Samples

Hi TM&E and Interop SC TOSCA-teers,

In the Technical Marketing and Education Ad Hoc, we talked about a pyramid with three levels of activity to promote TOSCA to the next level (amongst many other points and ideas).

1. The base of the pyramid is the on-going, never-ending marketing effort to keep the TOSCA name in the forefront of emerging tech and open standards – lots of conferences, panels, papers, blogs, whatever we need to do. The important thing is that this become an ONGOING, CONTINUOUS effort. We have most of the tools to do this already, but there is more to do, e.g., more technical slides, FAQ, blogs, etc.

2. Then, we discussed a growing mass of simple samples, the simplest example essentially being “hello world,” that proves the tool works. This effort might be best supported by a simple website or pages on OASIS that walk you through the examples, much as Puppet and Chef do, and the same way Tomcat was an entry to bigger things like Websphere when open standards based app servers were starting up as a category. The samples will be supported by a super-simple tool (see item 3 below).

2a. Should we consider an ad hoc group focused on creating and explaining the samples to drive this or would the Interop SC do this in cooperation with the TM&E ad hoc? The samples may be supported by a few more technical overview slides developed in the TM&E ad hoc.

3. Supporting the samples is a super-simple free tool that people can use the samples on, tweak those samples, etc. to prove to them the TOSCA concept works and for a community to form. Is that free tool possibly this new Eclipse project, which is apparently a plug-in? I have not studied this, but I think we should discuss along with FAQ, samples, and free tool next week.

QUESTION: presuming this makes sense to folks, is this a possible tool? I have not had a chance to read this myself, but it is a new, Eclipse project (not Winery) from the researchers at CELAR and others.

I’m factoring in the Interop SC folks,  as they may find the discussion of samples and tools of interest. As always, all are most welcome to comment, question, or whatever.

Thanks,

Paul
