I'd say markup & efficiency are tradeoffs each implementation
has to consciously (or most of the time unconsciously) made.
Extreme efficiency must eradicate markups altogether, while
well marked-up documents suffer from efficient transmission &
processing.

There does seem more and more reasons to consider something like
YML, where the good spirits of XML (such as structured, recursively
embedable, etc) but not the physical form, so that efficient
binary implementations can take place.

Did I see a syntax error or you're introducing a new variable naming
convention with "$" stuck to the rear?
