Subject: RE: [xliff] metadata and XLIFF
Hi All, Very nice job of moving this thread forward David. There seems to be some good potential here. Dimitra, will your research also include LISA/OSCAR standards? If so, I think we might finds some areas of synergy between XLIFF and those standards that we should look at in terms of leveraging (similar to our work concerning text elements and TMX). - Bryan ________________________________________ From: David Filip [DavidF@MoraviaWorldWide.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 21, 2009 8:54 AM To: Dimitra.Anastasiou; xliff@lists.oasis-open.org Cc: stephen.curran@cs.tcd.ie; dave.lewis@cs.tcd.ie; Reinhard.Schaler Subject: RE: [xliff] metadata and XLIFF Hi Dimitra, You can see that there are loads of metadata structures even in 1.2 +--- <header><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#header>? | | | +--- <skl><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#skl>? | | | | | +--- (<internal-file><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#internal-file> | <external-file><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#external-file>)1 | | | +--- <phase-group><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#phase-group>? | | | | | +--- <phase><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#phase>+ | | | | | +--- <note><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#note>* | | | +--- <glossary><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#glossary>* | | | | | +--- (<internal-file><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#internal-file> | <external-file><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#external-file>)1 | | | +--- <reference><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#reference>* | | | | | +--- (<internal-file><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#internal-file> | <external-file><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#external-file>)1 | | | +--- <count-group><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#count-group>* | | | | | +--- <count><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#count>* | | | +--- <tool><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#tool_elem>* | | | | | +--- [Extension Point] | | | +--- <prop-group><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#prop-group>* | | | | | +--- <prop><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#prop>* | | | +--- [Extension Point] | | | +--- <note><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#note>* In <body><group> | +--- <prop-group><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#prop-group>* | | | | | +--- <prop><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#prop>* | | | +--- [Extension Point] | | | +--- <note><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#note>* In <body>[<group>]<transunit> | +--- <context-group><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#context-group>* | | | | | +--- <context><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#context>+ | | | +--- <count-group><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#count-group>* | | | | | +--- <count><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#count>* | | | +--- <prop-group><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#prop-group>* | | | | | +--- <prop><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#prop>* | +--- [Extension Point] | | | +--- <note><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#note>* | | | +--- <alt-trans><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#alt-trans>* Yes I think the memory matches are metadata too.. | | | +--- <context-group><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#context-group>* | | | | | +--- <context><http://docs.oasis-open.org/xliff/v1.2/os/xliff-core.html#context>+ And more of the same in lower nested elements.. We LSPs are extremely interested in having good containers for metadata in the standard.. But you can see, this is a complex thing, some 80% of the standard may be considered as dealing with metadata. So I am with Christian, we might need a comprehensible ontology for metadata to be able to do a sensible revision of metadata for XLIFF 2.0. I am willing to work on the ontology with you and I think it is one of key prework areas for XLIFF 2.0. Looking at the complex structure of metadata containers even in 1.2, your group should try and match their collected requirements with the existent XLIFF capability, and consider well how to accomodate the non-matching.. I don’t know if it is appropriate or have time to discuss it in the meeting tomorrow, but I would be glad if you give me your opinions about how you imagine XLIFF version(s) in 2-3 years in relation to metadata. Do you have any specifications? Will it include rich, explicit and flexible metadata? How will this metadata help the whole workflow? Thank you a million in advance.
