<johnaborras@yahoo.co.uk>Indeed. Communication to the media is a very important part of the elections in Belgium, so for us (and me personally :) ) it would be beneficial if there was a standard that we can use to communicate the results. However, the 520 schema as it is now is very flexible but still lacks some important aspects (e.g. comparisons of results with list grouping, and lots and lots of special attributes), I can explain this either tomorrow or in later mails). So it might be better to create a new media schema and keep the 520 simple. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sven Rubben IBM GBS Tel: +32 2 225 27 47 BLS +32 495 26 13 10 GSM Mail: Sven Rubben/Belgium/IBM@IBMBE sven_rubben@be.ibm.com srubben@acm.org "Paul Spencer" <paul.spencer@boy nings.co.uk> To "David RR Webber \(XML\)" 06/18/07 05:31 PM <david@drrw.info>, "John Borras" <johnaborras@yahoo.co.uk> cc "EML TC" <election-services@lists.oasis-open .org>, Bernard Van Acker/Belgium/IBM@IBMBE, Sven Rubben/Belgium/IBM@IBMBE Subject RE: [election-services] OASIS EML TC MEETING I think we need to be careful about overloading the 520. This was developed originally to provide a simple result format for a "first past the post" election so that this result can be used to calculate another result (for example, using the d'Hondt algorithm). Communication to media was initially outside the scope of EML. This is not to say that we should continue to exclude this if there is a demand. We just need to be aware that we may be better off developing a new schema so that we do not lose the original purpose of the 520. I've also been working on something here in USA that I'm hoping will be publicly available shortly. What I found was the secret was to use XSLT to render the 510/520 content into the format they prefer visually. The underlaying details in the XML conform to the 510/520 v5 schemas. The new CountMetric is very powerful too in supplying ad hoc needs to media/auditors. BTW - since we are on the subject - I've had a request to create a new 530 Statistics schema. This would be modelled closely on the 510 - but exclude the candidate/proposal elements - since it is purely vote statistics about attendence and votes at each district and county level. Seems like we may be able to combine your experience into this new 530? John of course is rightly going to say the door is closed on additions to v5 - but what I'm seeing is the 530 would be a draft we can work on over the next few months and field test it with data to fine tune the model and use cases. We used the 520 to distribute the results to the VRT (Flemish public TV). It was a heavily customized version, so it might be interesting to exchange some ideas about how the media works in the different countries and what they expect from the EML messages they receive. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sven Rubben IBM GBS Tel: +32 2 225 27 47 BLS +32 495 26 13 10 GSM Mail: Sven Rubben/Belgium/IBM@IBMBE sven_rubben@be.ibm.com srubben@acm.org John Borras o.co.uk> To EML TC 06/12/07 10:22 AM .org> cc Subject [election-services] OASIS EML TC MEETING Further to yesterday's e-mail please find below details of the teleconference numbers for our TC meeting on 19th. 1.
