Subject: Minutes: XDI TC Telecon Thursday 1-2:30PM PT 2011-01-27
Following are the minutes of the unofficial telecon of the XDI TC at: Date: Thursday, 27 January 2011 USA Time: 1:00PM - 2:30PM Pacific Time (21:00-22:30 UTC) ATTENDING Giovanni Bartolomeo Bill Barnhill Markus Sabadello Joseph Boyle Michael Schwartz Drummond Reed GUESTS Cameron Hunt THE GOTOMEETING FOR TODAY IS: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/join/969244355 THE IDEARPAD LINK FOR TODAY IS: http://xdi.idearpad.org/20 AGENDA 1) INTRODUCTION TO CAMERON HUNT Cam has been active in using semantic technologies within the enterprise. He began working on flexible data models in the enterprise - specifically how to support user-driven dynamic data models. This led to work with RDF and RDF rules engines. Most recently he investigated integrating SPARQL into RDF rules engines. He shared the perspective that he feels that RDF has never defined a good way to express metadata on assertions. Secondly, he feels XDI contexts map more directly and intuitively to topic maps. For these reasons he would like to further explore XDI and help us define how we can best build bridges and help provide solutions to the world of RDF. 2) REVIEW UPDATED XDI GRAPH PATTERN DOCUMENTS Giovanni posted an updated version of his document: http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/40874/xdi-graph-wrapping-up-v2.doc Drummond is working on a new version of his graph pattern example document and apologized that he was not able to complete and upload it before the call. Giovanni went through his document to explain the XDI graph model and how it operates as an extension of the RDF graph model. One point we drilled down on is the ability to refer to the same real world entity in different contexts. This is different than owl:SameAs. Giovanni explained how it is actually the same concept expressed in a paper submitted to the RDF Next Steps workshop that called the use case "same as, different context". Cam agreed with us that the XDI model solves this cleanly. Cam also had some suggestions about how XDI can potentially can solve performance problems related to some RDF graph structures. As we finished reviewing Giovanni's document, we talked about the importance of metadata. Cam said that this issue is in fact a very important one within the RDF community, since the challenge of metadata (including versioning), is one that causes challenges in many implementations. Cam felt this is an area where there may be the most initial interest in XDI from the RDF community. 3) DISCUSSION OF NEW WEEKLY IMPLEMENTATION CALL Mike gave Cam and the rest of the TC an overview of the proposed open source project that will be discussed on the weekly implementation call starting tomorrow at noon Pacific. Mike reviewed the email he sent to the list of the key project components. He then described the Poken use cases that Gluu wants to implement. This led to a discussion of XDI link contracts and their use as a portable authorization mechanism. Cam made the point that such a mechanism has uses well beyond identity-to-identity authorization. Specifically he cited managing permissions and authorizations for resource objects within enterprises as they go through their entire lifecycle. 3) DISCUSSION OF XDI LITERAL ADDRESSING The following thread describes this issue and some proposed solutions. http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/xdi/201101/msg00026.html http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/xdi/201101/msg00029.html http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/xdi/201101/msg00030.html We ran out of time to discuss it but will put in on the agenda for next week. 4) NEXT CALL The next call is next week at the regular time. Drummond will be attending the Conversational Commerce Conference (C3) and may not be able to attend, but he will try, and will send an agenda in any case. ------------ ONGOING ISSUES LIST Each of these is a candidate for the agenda for future calls. * PROPOSED CONSTRUCTS/OPERATORS FOR XDI Discuss the following wiki page originally posted by Giovanni: http://wiki.oasis-open.org/xdi/XdiNewFoundation * DICTIONARY STRUCTURE Mike would like an example of the PDX dictionary as soon as we can do it. * EQUIVALENCE SEMANTICS Close on whether we need an additional $ word that is the equivalent of Higgins Personal Data Model (PDM) semantics of h:correlation, which is not as strong as $is. http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/xdi/201006/msg00036.html * COOL URIS Continue previous discussion about the use of standard RDF URIs in XDI: http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/xdi/201006/msg00023.html
