This is one of four documents contributed as background to the ongoing
debate on abstract identifiers, by the PILIN project
http://www.pilin.net.au . It is a draft that will be published later this
year on the PILIN 2 website. The documents reflect PILIN's orientation
towards persistent identification, and may not match XRI's concerns; but
they may be useful in giving another perspective on the debate.

The "PILIN Identifier Summary" presents a summary of the project's thinking
on identifiers, persistence, resolution vs. retrieval (and therefore
abstractly vs. concretely resolving identifiers), and the risks in
conflating protocol and identifier. It is intended for reading by both an
XRI and a W3C audience, and thus attempts to remain equidistant. :-)
