Subject: Re: [xri] Removal of XRI from OpenID

Even with XRI2.0, the amount of additional code necessary is minimal.
See: https://openid4.us/xri.php

I is only 5 lines including braces. It could be reduced to 1 line as well if we through away xri://=nat like syntax,
which I have never seen.

So, it is quite puzzling that the "additional complexity" is the issue there.

The other issue may be that in case of XRI, user specified claimed_id and and verified claimed_id is always going to be different, thus the RP must perform discovery on the resulting claimed_id. However, this is the same as the delegation case in general, and it is the case for the directed identity (identifier_select) as well.

Another issue is that XRI currently does not support OP Identifier.
I am working on it as well right now.

I am well aware that some contingent of the OpenID community wants to eliminate any special support for XRI. Ironically with XRI 3.0, an http or https-bound XRI can be treated just like a URI, so the only optional special support is for OpenID UI to recognize the = and @ symbols as shorthand for bound XRIs just like they would recognize www. as a prefix for URLs.

So I'm not sure it will be an issue.

In addition,  some members of the OpenID community who recognize the value of identifiers designed for long-term identity -- for example how XRI infrastructure solves the OpenID recycling problem -- so when the new OpenID Discovery WG finally gets to the issue, we can tackle it then.

Thanks for bringing it up so everyone is aware of it.

Best,

This is being considered for a future version of OpenID, possibly 2.1. Is there anything about the prospective removal that we should discuss here? As a new member of XRI TC I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, though a quick search of mail archives doesn't show it.
