Subject: RE: [dita-sidsc] RE: Why can't I subscribe for updates on the wiki?
Hey, our resources may be few, but they're mighty. --carol -----Original Message----- From: Mary McRae [mailto:marypmcrae@gmail.com] On Behalf Of Mary McRae Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2008 4:00 PM To: 'Beims Bob' Cc: 'Carol Geyer (OASIS)'; 'Neil Schelly (OASIS)'; 'Semiconductor Information Design Subcommittee' Subject: RE: [dita-sidsc] RE: Why can't I subscribe for updates on the wiki? The first step will be the public pages and ancillary resources (OASIS Library, wiki, etc.) but eventually will result in an entirely new suite of tools for TC management. It's a significant undertaking and we have few resources, but work is underway. Mary; If there are plans to change the infrastructure, then we definitely don't want to start down a path that will be a dead-end. But at least I've lodged a feature request for the Drupal deployment! I'll let the SIDSC members know that we'll have to manually email the list when we make Wiki page changes. Hi Bob, That's an interesting suggestion - that the TC maillist be subscribed. I don't know if that's feasible, or if all TCs/SCs would want that implemented. A member who updates a wiki page could also send a note to the TC list indicating that they've done so - that would eliminate messages every time something is touched. I'm also not sure how notifications work - if they "inherit" or if each page would need a separate subscription. At this point in time there are no plans for MoinMoin wiki changes; there is a major effort underway that will change the way our main websites and public TC pages are hosted; it is likely (but no decisions have been made as of yet) that MoinMoin will go away in favor of Drupal-based functionality. Mary; I guess I don't quite follow the logic ... * http://wiki.oasis-open.org/ content is visible to non-members (a Good Thing) * non-members can't login, and thus can't make changes (a Good Thing) * non-members, since they can't login, can't subscribe to topics (a Neutral Thing) * members can login, and thus can make changes (a Good Thing) * members can't subscribe to be notified when changes are made by other members, and thus collaboration is hindered (a Bad Thing, IMO) Perhaps there's something in MoinMoin's implementation that makes subscriptions a problem for the way oasis-open.org is using it? But how about this as a workaround: The http://wiki.oasis-open.org/ admin makes the dita-sidsc@lists.oasis-open.org mail list a subscriber to all topics in the web underneath http://wiki.oasis-open.org/dita/Semiconductor so that folks who are part of the subcommittee are automatically "subscribed" to changes? Just a thought... Hi Bob, That functionality has been disabled since it would not be available to non-members. Neil; The DITA Semiconductor Information Design Subcommittee is trying to use the http://wiki.oasis-open.org/dita <http://wiki.oasis-open.org/dita> for collaboration, but one big hurdle is that people have to remember to go look at the wiki to discover updates. When I select "Subscribe User" from the "More Actions" menu, I get the message "You are not allowed to perform this action". So how do we get email updates sent to folks when changes are made on the wiki?
