Subject: DOCBOOK: Re: [docbook-tc] DocBook Technical Committee Meeting Minutes:17 Dec 2002

Hash: SHA1

/ Paul Grosso <pgrosso@arbortext.com> was heard to say:
| What, if anything, are we going to say about the syntax/semantics
| of this attribute's value?

The semantics are roughly analogous to the semantics of 'tabstyle' on CALS
tables. It's a hook where users can provide some sort of keyword or token
to influence the stylesheets.

In the particular case of the DocBook XSL Stylesheets, I expect to use
the xrefstyle attribute to select different localization text. This
will give users an easy hook into alternate presentations without
having to learn how to write custom templates.

Other stylesheets could do different things, of course, and the
specific semantics would have to be documented for interchange.

| Are we going to describe the syntax
| Bob proposed so that, for example, the DocBook XSL stylesheets
| can make use of it?

Yes, the stylesheet documentation will describe whatever gets
implemented. I think I prototyped this with 'role' a while back, I'll
have to make sure that code gets into the main sources.

The notion of using a more procedural style, allowing a sort of
selector syntax in the attribute instead of just a keyword, appeals to
me less, but if there's demand for it, I expect it'll get implemented

                                        Be seeing you,
