All,
As a fairly new company we have looked at developing a distributed control
system
using web services at the server level and XML as the abstraction for all
aspects
of control and configuration.
Our display and video servers are configured and controlled purely by XML
messages.
As the processing, memory and cost is always the driver at the end point
we minimise the
checking of the XML messages to validating the originator and ensuring that
the
XML format is as expected. If either fails the message is ignored and an
error message
is sent back to the system error log (general on the system server). We have
basically
identified the following generic message types for our system
1. Configuration - (configure video streams, discrete I/O, events and responses)
2. Control - (ie PTZ type commands, start video stream etc)
3. Status - (end point status, etc)
4. Acknowledge - the ack message can be used when a confirmation is required
by the
sender or for sending messages)
We envisage a situation where all control and configuration is abstarcted
out by XML messages.
For any device to communicate to our end points they could easily be provide
a schema or
given access to through WSDL. When you start to go down web services the
requesting would of
course be done through the server, to ensure correct validation etc..
We have discounted the use of schemas at the remote devices. The schema can
be defined
and used at the enterprise end. DTDs are another matter, which is lower weight
and easily
defined for an end point.
regards,
Mike

We now
have plenty to discuss (SIA roadtrip, OSE, BACnet access
control proposal etc). My problem is that I cannot easily set up a teleconference
from here in Europe for a mostly stateside audience. We need a volunteer
to arrange a facility and then we can call a first meeting date.
