I used the term "red herring" perhaps incorrectly then. I drew no 
assumption about intent; I simply meant to indicate Svante was drawing 
an inappropriate conclusion from my argument about preserving 
attributes.

So apologies to Svante for my imprecise use of metaphor :-)
