+1 on above.

We need to improve upon past work and not start from scratch. Otherwise 
we will just build another set of new issues.
The only reason to start from scratch would be if there was nothing good 
available and that is not true with SRU/Z39.50.

+1. I hope your proposal would take into account the proposal I have 
made already on this issue. Here is a brief summary of main point:

* Use ATOM feed format as default, required canonical response format
* If we decide to keep old response format then it should be optional 
and marked deprecated and meant only for legacy clients
