A good way to counteract that situation (if you have not done so already) is to provide an example of where processing breaks down due to semantic inconsistency. One potential example is where measurement values are sent to a service, and the semantics regarding units are incorrect.

I wasn't referring to anyone on the list :)

I get a lot of *push back* on the concept of semantics in my 
environment. It can be a lonely struggle getting people to understand 
the importance and potential for semantically grounded integration. 
Some people think that everything can be solved with a few schemas.
