A related point which widens the debate a bit I hope - 
Having a reference abstract model will enable use of well-founded topic map
abstractions in ways which are not tied to the syntax - and it may be that
using co-ordinates as a metaphor would be better framed in that way, with
use in interaction separated from the question of interchanging (using 13250
or XTM syntax) the maps.
