Subject: RE: [xtm-wg] RE: XTM-UCS: XML Fragment and collated current respo nses
I was trying to program a HTML form and Perl cgi script over the weekend. Unfortunately I don't have spare room on a server here (our sys dev team is moving building right now -- wholesale), and couldn't confirm which OS the cgi would be sitting on so I didn't get around to doing anything sophisticated like having it write the XML-tagged data into a field in a database. (Anyone out there ever attempted to do the equivalent of file-locking on Windows using Perl? If you know of a superb FMTYEWTKA... on this subject, let me know.) If somebody has a spare server with DB and Perl and can let me know what OS it's on, and what DB (please say Apache on Linux/UNIX, please...) let me know and I'll tweak the Perl script as much as I can before handing it across. It is bound to need work on the server end though as I'm programming 'blind' here (On WinVomit98). Here's the HTML form, just in case someone already has a script that could suck data into a DB without me having to spend more time attempting to code this. The additional text file contains the various fields returned in the POST request. cheers Peter -----Original Message----- From: Bryan Thompson [mailto:bryan-pop@cog-tech.com] Sent: 29 August 2000 12:32 To: Patrick Durusau Cc: xtm-ucs@cog-tech.com Subject: [xtm-wg] RE: XTM-UCS: XML Fragment and collated current responses Patrick, I like your idea. I am disquieted by the low volume here. We should at least see uses case recommendations from the members of the XTM-UCS group, and I would hope that each of the XTM vendors would be able to contribute some recommendations as well. -bryan -----Original Message----- From: Patrick Durusau [mailto:pdurusau@emory.edu] Sent: Sunday, August 27, 2000 11:54 AM To: Bryan Thompson Cc: xtm-ucs@cog-tech.com Subject: XTM-UCS: XML Fragment and collated current responses Bryan, I have pasted below a suggested XML fragment to capture the responses to our survey. How does everyone feel about including it with the survey so people can fill it out with their responses? I was thinking that we could add an attribute as part of the UCS work on <Case> to indicate our classification of the suggestion according to some agreed upon typology. Using the XML fragment would allow us to simply paste the responses into the master survey results and we could easily produce weekly (every 2 weeks?) HTML pages for posting to the XTM site for review. It would also make generation of a collated list by "type" a mechanical process. Since I have collated only 3 responses below in the suggested master survey results this may seem like overkill but as the results grow I think we will come to appreciate the use of XML for this purpose. This will allow us to propose a collated format for Ann's generous offer of review and to deliver her a file that she can manipulate in other ways if she would find that helpful. BTW, I would suggest that we request that respondents simply type their answers in the fragment and not to edit it with some other tool for attachment. My email client tries to be helpful and eats markup in attached documents. :-( Thoughts, comments?
