Subject: [xtm-wg] Results of the Swindon meeting

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone
who took part in the Authoring Group face-to-face last weekend
in Swindon. I think we have good reason to be proud of our
achievement, and (not least) of the fact that we remained on
good terms despite som hard discussions! I really enjoyed
working with you all.

However, we cannot rest on our laurels. Time is very short and
we have an important deadline to meet. The first thing we have
to do is inform the rest of the world about our results, so I
would like to encourage Michel to get his draft minutes circulated,
and Murray & Sam to get a revised version of the draft DTD out,
both as soon as possible.

We also need to get discussion going on a number of issues that
were not resolved in Swindon:

* Numerous issues relating to the merging of topic maps.
  -> Kal will post a discussion paper shortly.

* The issue of whether *all* references to topics (including typing,
  scoping, etc.) should be xlinks, or only associations and occurrences
  as in the current draft.
  -> Someone who feels strongly that they should all be xlinks (Murray?)
     ought to post a specific proposal and a justification.

* The consequences of having killed off facets...
  -> Related to the discussion about RDF and the conceptual model:
     who wants to start the ball rolling?

* Review of the reification mechanism, checking that it does in fact
  work for *any* topic map object, not just associations, and that
  we are not overloading the concept of identity.
  -> It is my belief that the mechanism *does* work and that the
     onus must be on those who disagree to prove otherwise. Michel
     had some comments on this that we never got around to on Sunday.
     I suggest he formulates these to start the discussion.

* Finalize the proposal for PSIs, including the URN issue.
  -> Murray A. is responsible for chairing this subgroup. Steve N.
     and Daniel will be key contributors.

* Getting marketing activities underway.
  -> See next message.

Steve
