Subject: RE: [xtm-wg] tag line: the GPS metaphor and other metaphors

Charles attributes the phrase to Steve Pepper (e.g., his presentation at XML
Europe 2000). The phrase is used in the summary of Pepper's paper that is
reprinted in the XML Handbook, (2nd and 3rd editions).

I've worked with Charles for nearly two decades, and I'm the first to say we
owe a lot to him -- but I'm also quick to assert we don't need to give him
credit for more than he's due. We wouldn't have SGML without him (and thus
XML and TMs), but he didn't invent it singlehandedly, and it's purely urban
legend that he invented markup, text processing, and computers.

The real question here is, of course, not ownership of a phrase but whether
the phrase is useful in this context.

I like the phrase because it's short, it's just trendy/high tech enough for
now (but maybe not 3 years from now), and people will understand it. I
prefer it in a variant that refers to "information" or "knowledge" rather
than to the "Web" because TMs work in more than a Web environment. But I
don't think we need to push a tag line for deep meaning or for full
congruence with a conceptual model.
