The id can be any string, it doesn't have to be significant, but in your
example,
clearly the association is: "EarthIsAPlanetOfSun", in other words, you are
talking of an instance, not of the association type.
I propose therefore that your id becomes:
<association id="EarthIsAPlanetOfSun">

Now, to speak about an association, you can simply make a topic,
whose subject indicator is the association element itself.

<topic id="EarthAroundSun">
<subjectIdentity>
     <subjectIndicatorRef xlink:href="#EarchIsAPlanetOfSun"/>
</subjectIdentity>
<!--
all other subelements of topic are available, if desirable
....[instanceOf ....]
