Subject: Re: [xdi] Chat room for weekly calls

Hmm webxmpp says the following:
Getting public key from WebXMPP...cancel request
A password is required.
Getting public key from WebXMPP...cancel request
Connecting to XMPP server conference.communitivity.com...cancel request
No response from the server.:

Going to try Psi now.

Ok, XMPP server on communitivity.com is up and running.
All you need to connect to it is one of any of the major XMPP clients: Gaim, Psi, Adium, iChat, Spark, etc.

I'd highly recommend Psi, there are Windows, Mac, & Linux versions found at http://psi-im.org/
If you are Mac then Adium is also a very good client and more geared for new XMPP users.

For Psi you join by clicking on the General menu on the menu bar and selecting Join Groupchat, then use the following values:
   Host: conference.communitivity.com
   Room: xdi
Nickname: Your choice, I think i-names will work however..global i-names will definitely work without =.

    then click join

For Adium, select File menu, Join Group Chat..., and enter the following values:
   Chat room name: xdi
   Server: conference.communitivity.com
Handle: your choice, see Nickname in Psi instructions above

   then click join

For gmail web client...
   Not supported unfortunately
Not great by any means, but there is a free online XMPP client at
     http://www.webxmpp.com/main.html
If anyone needs to use webxmpp let me know and I'll send out a separate set of directions for that

Talk to you all tomorrow,

Bill, that's super. Just to verify, XMPP will let us type in X3 simple examples to the chat room? That's the capability I think we'd find most useful.

I have one already running on Communitivity.com. I will enable it and make sure it works tonight and send out instructions tonight. It is XMPP, running ejabberd.  I'd be happy to offer this for use of the TC.  I'd prefer XMPP rather than Skype as it is open and offers a wider range of clients.

Per Markus' and Giovanni's notes, I wholeheartedly agree that having a chat room during our telecons is extremely helpful. However I was frustrated by the soaphub chatroom we used on the last call because you can't type X3 into it - it only permits single lines of text. IMHO any chat room we use must enable us to type X3.

Since a number of callers are using Skype anyway, is there any reason not to just use a Skype chatroom? Or, if that is a problem, is there any other open chatroom we can use that would allow us to type X3?
