Yes, I believe in fact it was you that mentioned this option previously,
as well as David W.

Type (not dangling) and element substitution don't seem all that
different for the problem under discussion, because to have both simple
and complex types for elements that are substituted would require the
"mixed=true" 
trick, or so it seems to me.

Jaxb supports element substitution. OO-friendliness would need a bit
more commentary, but it has not been a big factor.

I can rework the schema to use type substitution so we have that as a
candidate, but the difference seems mainly in whether we use the same
element name, but with different types (via @xsi:type) or we use
different names, and these will generally have different types. 

Maybe this should be our first jira issue!

I am curious if you had considered the use of type substitution instead 
of substitution groups (element substitution).

RegRep experience has shown that to be a better option as it fits data 
binding tools better and is more object oriented.
