Subject: RE: GetCaseList
Correct. A unique identifier can always be derived. We leave that up to the system being sourced. But back to the original context – justification for a GetCaseList by case number – the end user won’t know (and should not have to know)
the criteria for establishing uniqueness thus a search is applicable. Thanks. Philip Baughman From: Todd Vincent [mailto:tvincent@onelegal.com] A court case number is always unique when combined with some combination of the court, court division, case category, case type, location. The ECF spec misses this and is not ideal in that regard.

On Behalf Of Baughman, Philip Sure. They may or may not be logical from a system designer’s perspective but sometimes that does not matter when it comes to long standing business processes or other constraints. I seem to recall a few scenarios that were due to accommodating
a limitation in a prior case management system which led to tentacles into other systems that then carries over to a new CMS. In most cases, the data conversion to the new system provides an opportunity to rectify things but then again you sometimes hear
“we can’t change the number because that number is all over the documents”. In that scenario it is likely that no NEW duplicate case numbers would be created, but would remain in the legacy data. Anyway, as I said, we make accommodations for this reality
in our implementation as a fail-safe. Philip Baughman From: Chatz, John [mailto:John.Chatz@perspecta.com]
Can you explain what you mean when you say the “case number is not unique in some jurisdictions?” When would a case number not be unique or singularly identifiable? John Chatz Justice and Public Safety Offerings Lead Phone: +1 847-609-7772 eMail:

On Behalf Of Baughman, Philip Although it is rare, the case number is not unique in some jurisdictions. For this reason, we use (and allow for) a separate identity for uniquely identifying a case. Philip Baughman From:

On Behalf Of James E Cabral Enrique, Maybe I don’t understand your use case. If you already know the case number, why do you need to use GetCaseList? Can’t you just call GetCase directly? __ From:
legalxml-courtfiling@lists.oasis-open.org <legalxml-courtfiling@lists.oasis-open.org> on behalf of Othon, Enrique <Enrique.Othon@tylertech.com> Sorry about the timing of these questions, I just haven’t had time until just recently to really dig into the messages. I noticed the GetCaseList schema does not have an element for the case number. For a case number search was the intent to use the DocumentIdentification? Or should it have a j:CaseNumberText element? |
